Since ants are looking for a drink or a free meal, the best way to keep them out in the first place is to keep your kitchen and food serving areas clean. Also, regularly inspect your plumbing for leaks that would supply ants with a source of drinking water. If the little pests are already inside, here are some tips to send them to the big anthill in the sky:

• Nicotine tea. Purchase pipe tobacco and soak it overnight in a gallon of water to create a tobacco tea. Remove and discard the tobacco and pour the tea generously over any anthills in your yard. Note:wear gloves at all times when handling the tobacco tea. The high concentration of nicotine can be harmful if absorbed through the skin.
• Cleaning house. In a spray bottle, mix three parts dish soap with one part water. The highly concentrated soap solution will kill ants on contact. Keep the bottle handy and spray any ants that wader though your kitchen before they have time to report to the nest.
• The acid treatment. Boric acid (found in the commercial product Borax) is an effective way to kill ants. To make an ant bait using Borax, mix 3 cups of water, 1 cup of sugar and 4 teaspoons of Borax. Pour the bait into open containers that have been loosely filled with cotton balls or padding. Place the bait traps near anthills or in areas that ants frequent. A stronger solution will kill ants quickly, while a weaker solution will allow ants to bring the bait back to the nest where it will kill any ants that eat it.Note: be sure to place boric acid traps where they will not be exposed to children or pets.
